Message from Alan Herman, ICRF Executive Director – June 2026

The success of modern immunotherapy is a powerful example of why investing in basic cancer research is so critical. Although the field of immunotherapy traces its origins back to 1891, it did not become a widely accepted standard of care until more than a century later. The discoveries that made this revolution possible were built over decades by scientists seeking to understand the fundamental mechanisms of cancer and the immune system. Through its unwavering support of innovative researchers in Israel, ICRF has helped build the scientific foundation that drives today’s breakthroughs in immunotherapy – and tomorrow’s cures.

As June marks Cancer Immunotherapy Month, we are honored to highlight some of the trailblazing immunotherapy research that ICRF is currently supporting. These projects represent the next generation of scientific discovery and underscore the importance of investing in research today to create better treatments and outcomes for patients in the future.

At ICRF, we never lose sight of two fundamental truths: some of the world’s most innovative and impactful cancer research is happening in Israel, and it can only happen because of the generosity and commitment of our extraordinary supporters. Last week, I had the privilege of witnessing this firsthand when our Connecticut Board Members Karen Malkin, Toby Schaffer, Lisa Manheim, and Pam Feldstein, graciously hosted a gathering of more than forty friends and supporters to meet ICRF-funded researcher Dr. Ruth Perets of Rambam Medical Center.

Dr. Perets shared updates on her groundbreaking ovarian cancer research and the clinical implications she hopes it will have for patients in the years ahead. She also spoke candidly about the ongoing challenges facing researchers in Israel and emphasized that the support she receives through ICRF enables her and her team to continue moving forward in the fight against cancer. It was a powerful reminder that every research breakthrough begins with the dedication of talented scientists and the generosity of donors who believe in their work.

I hope to have the opportunity to connect with many of you in the coming weeks, whether at the Sandy Herzfeld Memorial Golf Outing in Scarsdale, the Women of Action Brunch in Stamford, Night of Games in Chicago, or one of our upcoming scientist visits. Together, we are advancing lifesaving research and supporting the innovative scientists whose work may lead to the next transformative breakthrough in cancer prevention, diagnosis, or treatment.

With appreciation,
