Asaf Madi, PhD

Tel Aviv University

ICRF Research Career Development Award Recipient

Dr. Asaf Madi studies the molecular signaling that occurs in the tumor microenvironment in response to immunotherapy and immune cell interactions.

The goal of Dr. Madi’s ICRF-funded project is to identify a special class of cells involved in the immune system’s response to cancer, called “memory T cells”, at the earliest stage of their development and determine the signals required for their activation.  To do so, his team will use advanced technologies and computational methods to examine gene expression in single cells to identify key regulators that are expressed during differentiation from naïve states, when cells do not recognize the tumor; to memory states, when they readily attack the tumor. These studies will reveal potential targets for therapeutic translation.

“The ICRF Research Career Development Award is wonderful news for our research group. It will enable us to pursue the ambitious goal of developing therapeutics designed to increase the effect of the immune system to control tumors, by shifting the balance of T-cells away from non-responsiveness toward durable long-term protective immunity. On a personal note, the grant came at the perfect time as I take my first steps as an independent researcher in this challenging field.”
