In The News: ICRF-Funded Study Explores Aging
Former ICRF Grantee and International Scientific Council Member Howard Cedar Leads New Research

New research led by Prof. Howard Cedar of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem is offering a new perspective on how aging occurs—and what it could mean for cancer and other age-related diseases.
Published in Nature Communications, the study found that aging does not happen uniformly throughout the body. Instead, individual cells can age at different rates, with some accumulating age-related changes much faster than their neighboring cells. The researchers identified a molecular “aging signature” that may help reveal which cells are aging first and why.
Prof. Cedar is a former Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) grantee and a member of ICRF’s International Scientific Council. He was the first recipient of ICRF’s Research Professorship Grant, the organization’s highest and most prestigious grant category, for his groundbreaking research into DNA methylation.
His pioneering work has helped advance our understanding of how genes are turned on and off and how abnormalities in DNA methylation contribute to cancer. That foundational research continues to have implications for cancer detection and treatment, as well as for understanding the biology of aging.

Cedar’s latest findings could ultimately help researchers better understand why certain cells age faster than others and explore new approaches to slowing the biological processes associated with aging and age-related diseases.
